engineer = a job.

film maker = starve to death in the street.

I can see why they pushed you toward engineering.

do both, major in engineering which makes them happy, then take courses in film...if they ask tell them you are required to take electives and you want to take these rather than gym or joining the paper. this way you get the degree in engineering, then you can temporarily work at this making money while finishing your other degree in film. win win. plus its always good to have something that makes money funding your film projects until they start taking off on their own, if they ever do.
